Trump Admin Threatens To Defund California After Defiance Of Executive Order

President Donald Trump is continuing his war with Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who many experts believe will vie for the party’s presidential nomination in the next election.

The president is making serious efforts to withhold any federal funding he legally can from the Golden State, sources said to CNN.

The administration has advised the heads of its agencies to research which grants can be withheld, and is considering terminating all grants for the University of California and California State University systems, CNN reported.

“No taxpayer should be forced to fund the demise of our country,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said on Friday. “No final decisions, however, on any potential future action by the Administration have been made, and any discussion suggesting otherwise should be considered pure speculation.”

Last month, the president threatened to withhold funding from the state after a transgender athlete competed against girls and dominated.

“Please be hereby advised that large-scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to,” he said.

Another issue the president is focused on is the antisemitism on university campuses in the state.

The governor and former Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, have hit back at the president.

“Californians pay the bills for the federal government,” the governor said in a post on X on Friday. “We pay over $80 BILLION more in taxes than we get back. Maybe it’s time to cut that off, @realDonaldTrump.”

“My office is engaging local and state partners in preparing for all possible scenarios. Whatever cruel crusade the President may announce against California, we will fight back,” Pelosi said.

H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for Newsom’s Department of Finance, spoke to KCRA 3 about the possible cuts but said the state did not know what was planned.

“And that’s because the only thing that has come from Washington about this so far is a lot of unattributed quotes and statements of intent. But no numbers, no spreadsheets, nothing real that you could actually analyze,” he said.

“So at this point, it’s a lot of rhetoric but not a lot to back it up. That’s not to say that the administration may not come down later today or in the next few days to put out something that they think fulfills what they’re talking about here,” he added.

He said that the post on X by the governor “was making a very clear point: this isn’t a one-way transaction.”

“Because of our strength, because of our tech-based economy, we contribute mightily to the federal government and the nation’s revenue source,” Palmer said.

“What the governor I think was suggesting in the tweet is that [the president] may suggest and talk a tough game about taking away dollars, but if you really want to go down this road, let’s have a serious discussion about how much California contributes to the national economy and to the national, Treasury in terms of the amount of tax dollars that Californians pay to the federal government,” he said.

“I think this is just another inning in a very long game that has been going on since the beginning of the year,” the spokesman said.

“The governor and elected officials, the attorney general, among others, have made it very clear that we’re not going to back down from our values if there’s a threat to California, we’re going to stand up to it,” he said.

Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas posted on BlueSky about the state possibly keeping funds from the federal government, but did not give specifics of how it would do that.

“I’ll use every legal and constitutional tool available to defend CA,” he said. “We must look at every option, including withholding federal taxes.”
