Supreme Court’s Medina Ruling Frees States To Defund Planned Parenthood

The United States Supreme Court dealt a severe blow to the abortion industry by permitting states to defund abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood.
In its 6-3 ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the court recognized that states have the authority to determine who is eligible for Medicaid financing and can instead finance groups that offer actual, complete healthcare.
For seven years, Republican South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has maintained his state’s policy of not using taxpayer cash to subsidize abortion clinics. South Carolina was represented in the Supreme Court by Alliance Defending Freedom, which received support from a large coalition that included the federal government and 18 states.

The Alliance Defending Freedom claimed that states should be able to redirect Medicaid monies away from the abortion business and toward legitimate health care providers who provide a wide range of services to women. The court’s decision last week empowers South Carolina to do exactly that.
They also don’t require public funds because they are already wealthy with cash.
Planned Parenthood, for example, collected $3.2 billion from taxpayers over five years. This is in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars it receives annually from individual donations. Since the overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022, Planned Parenthood has experienced a surge in fundraising, amassing more than $2.5 billion in net assets.
Despite such revenues, Planned Parenthood has proved to be a poor steward of its resources.

According to The New York Times, during the past five years, Planned Parenthood’s “national office has distributed more than $899 million to affiliates to help them deliver care, but none of it went directly to medical services.”
Where has it gone?
According to The Times, much of it went into pro-abortion politics and legal fees. Meanwhile, women’s health deteriorated.
Planned Parenthood saw a 31% decrease in women’s preventative-care visits between 2022 and 2023, despite performing a record-breaking 402,000 abortions. Since 2010, its cancer screening and prevention services have decreased by 71%, including a 72% reduction in breast examinations and 74% in pap tests.
The Times also found several instances of botched care, old equipment, undertrained employees, and a “chaotic” and “toxic” atmosphere at Planned Parenthood.

One former employee characterized the facilities as a “conveyor belt” where women were frequently given the wrong drugs, transferred to the wrong rooms, and prepared for the wrong operations as workers “scrambled to move people in and out.”
Planned Parenthood is now the nation’s second-largest distributor of harmful gender-transition medications, which it freely advertises and distributes to kids. Not surprisingly, when South Carolina took action to protect children from these medications despite the political efforts of Planned Parenthood, the organization was “outraged.”
Most Americans also reject spending tax resources to fund abortions. This Supreme Court decision vindicates them.
Because of this decision, South Carolina taxpayers will no longer have to fund Planned Parenthood’s subpar care for women or gender-transition medicines for children.
