DOJ: Washington Post Journalist Arrested, Charged With Horrific Child Crime

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist from the Washington Post has been arrested after investigators allegedly found child pornography on his work computer, according to an announcement Friday from the DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro.

Thomas Pham LeGro, a 48-year-old video editor at the paper, was taken into custody Thursday after FBI agents raided his home in Washington, DC. Pirro’s office says agents found a folder on LeGro’s work laptop containing 11 videos showing child sexual abuse material,” The New York Post reported.

During the search, FBI agents also found “fractured pieces of a hard drive in the hallway outside the room where LeGro’s work laptop was found,” according to the official report.

LeGro appeared in District Court on Friday. A detention hearing is set for next Wednesday. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison, the report said.

According to a heavily redacted FBI affidavit, LeGro was linked to multiple E-Gold accounts from 2005 to 2006. E-Gold was a digital payment platform that shut down in 2007 after federal officials accused it of laundering money for child pornographers.

The affidavit also says the FBI got court approval to monitor LeGro’s internet activity back in May.

LeGro worked in the Washington Post’s sports section from 2000 to 2006, then spent time as a reporter and producer at “PBS NewsHour” before returning to the Post in 2013. His bio says he was part of the outlet’s video team that won a Pulitzer in 2017 for reporting on Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore.

That story included allegations that Moore romantically pursued a 14-year-old girl when he was in his 30s, which Moore strongly denied and threatened to sue over at the time.

A spokesperson for the Washington Post said LeGro has been placed on leave.

“The Washington Post understands the severity of these allegations, and the employee has been placed on leave,” the outlet said in a statement.

The Department of Justice announced the arrest in a press release.

“Thomas Pham LeGro, 48, made his first appearance today in U.S. District Court for allegedly possessing child pornography. LeGro, a journalist at the Washington Post and resident of the District of Columbia, was arrested yesterday and taken into custody following a search of his home,” the press release said.

“The charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro. Pirro thanks FBI Assistant Director in Charge Steven J. Jensen and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department for their ongoing efforts in this investigation, it said.

“On June 26, 2025, FBI agents executed a search warrant at LeGro’s residence and seized several electronic devices. A review of LeGro’s work laptop revealed a folder that contained 11 videos depicting child sexual abuse material,” the Department of Justice said.
